Dakota's Little Sister in Spotlight
January 22, 2008. By Leigh Dyer

At the Sundance Film Festival, it's 9-year-old Elle Fanning's turn to make waves.

She explores the issue of childhood mental illness in "Phoebe in Wonderland," which co-stars Felicity Huffman of "Desperate Housewives." In an interview Monday, Elle said she loved the Phoebe character, who's "spunky and weird; weird in a good way."

Last year, it was her older sister, Dakota, who made headlines with the controversial N.C.-filmed "Hounddog," which depicted the teen in a rape scene. She's better known for starring in such A-list projects as "War of the Worlds" and "Charlotte's Web."

Elle said the acting business hasn't changed their relationship: "We're just normal sisters. We both go to school and we just play together."

"Phoebe" is one of 16 films vying for the festival's dramatic competition prize, which will be announced this weekend.
